THE IMPACT OF THE WAR IN UKRAINE ON THE DYNAMICS OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE MICE INDUSTRY IN THE CITY OF LVIV

This article provides a comprehensive analysis of the transformation of Lviv as a platform for business events during the period of full-scale war in Ukraine, with particular emphasis on the structural shifts occurring within the MICE industry (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions). The study investigates how wartime challenges reshape the city’s capacity to host professional events, influence the behavior of event organizers and participants, alter logistical and infrastructural demands, and redefine the competitive position of Lviv within the national and regional MICE market. Special attention is given to the city’s resilience strategies and its ability to retain its status as one of Ukraine’s leading centers of business tourism. The analysis explores the broader economic context of wartime Ukraine, highlighting macroeconomic pressures that directly and indirectly affect the MICE industry, including disruptions in mobility, increased security requirements, fluctuations in investment activity, and shifts in regional development priorities. The article examines the evolving role of the MICE industry in maintaining economic dynamism, supporting entrepreneurial engagement, and facilitating professional networking in conditions of uncertainty. It also discusses how Lviv adapts to these conditions by modifying event formats, introducing hybrid solutions, strengthening safety protocols, and developing partnerships aimed at sustaining business tourism flows. The study includes an evaluation of statistical indicators reflecting the performance of the MICE industry in Lviv during wartime, revealing changes in the number, scale, geography, and thematic orientation of events. These findings are used to identify key challenges—such as event relocation, staffing shortages, limited funding opportunities, and infrastructural constraints—along with emerging opportunities linked to innovation, digitalization, and the growing demand for flexible event models. The conclusion outlines the prospects for further development of Lviv’s MICE industry and formulates recommendations for enhancing its stability, competitiveness, and strategic importance under martial law and in the post-war recovery period.
