THE ROLE OF ORGANIZED COMMODITY MARKETS IN THE SALES SYSTEM OF AGRICULTURAL ENTERPRISES

Abstract

The article examines organized commodity markets as an important institutional environment for the marketing activities of agricultural enterprises. It is substantiated that, under current conditions, their significance extends beyond the direct organization of agricultural product transactions and encompasses the establishment of transparent rules of market interaction, price benchmarks, quality standards, mechanisms for contract enforcement, information support, financing, and risk management. It is determined that organized commodity markets contribute to reducing transaction costs and information asymmetry, expand agricultural producers’ access to potential buyers, strengthen their bargaining positions, and create the prerequisites for more informed production and marketing decisions. The main functions of organized commodity markets for agricultural enterprises are systematized, including trading, informational, standardization, guarantee, and financial functions. The role of commodity exchanges, electronic trading systems, auctions, warehouse documents, forward, futures, and other derivative contracts in facilitating the sale of agricultural products, generating market price signals, maintaining enterprise liquidity, and mitigating price and counterparty risks is examined. It is established that the effectiveness of organized commodity markets depends not only on the regulatory and legal framework but also on market liquidity, the reliability of market information, the development of warehousing, logistics, financial and digital infrastructure, as well as participants’ trust in trading rules and contract enforcement mechanisms. Particular attention is paid to the institutional readiness of agricultural enterprises to participate in organized trading. It is proposed to consider such readiness as a comprehensive characteristic comprising regulatory and contractual, product and quality, information and digital, logistics and infrastructure, financial and risk-management, and reputational dimensions. This approach makes it possible to link an enterprise’s capacity to operate within an organized commodity market environment with its ability to identify and mitigate marketing risks in a timely manner. Under conditions of wartime, logistical, price, and financial instability, institutional readiness acquires the features of adaptive resilience, as it determines an agricultural enterprise’s ability to maintain continuity of product sales, comply with contractual obligations, diversify marketing channels, and preserve financial stability. It is substantiated that the further development of organized commodity markets in Ukraine should be based on the integration of trading, warehousing, logistics, financial, and digital infrastructure; the development of cooperation and product aggregation services; the improvement of price indicators; and the expansion of producers’ access to financial and information instruments. These measures will contribute to greater transparency, competitiveness, and resilience of agricultural marketing, particularly for small and medium-sized agricultural enterprises.
